The 2020 Census matters, especially in times of need

April 9, 2020 by Rockland WDB

Now more than ever, while in the midst of this tragic time with Coronavirus running rampant throughout our country and local communities it shows just how vital accurate data impacts our daily lives, even when we don’t normally see it.  Taking the Census only takes a few minutes by visiting: www.my2020census.gov

Here are Ten ways that the 2020 Census Matters to all of us especially in times of need:
  1. Accurate population count, which tells us how many people to serve in an emergency.
  2. The different languages spoken in an area, which helps us know how to communicate with people in an emergency.
  3. Age breakdown, so we know how many children or elderly are in an area.
  4. Ethnic & cultural differences so we know how to serve various groups in times of need.
  5. Proper guidelines for local government to know how to plan for emergencies.
  6. Funding for special programs specific to helping people in need, especially in an emergency.
  7. Ability for local governments to get adequate funding to hire and fund enough emergency personnel and their equipment based off accurate data.
  8. How medical facilities can properly plan and serve their communities in times of need.
  9. Non-profits and food pantries are able to get grants and funding so they are open and able to serve when their community needs them.
  10. Schools, are a safe-haven and often source of food are able to help our children require the data to accurately support their students, even now with some sending meals home and allowing for food for those who need it.
So, please share this message with your friends, family and coworkers – www.my2020census.gov
Remember, we all count regardless of our background, income, gender, ethnicity.  We all call this place home and we all need to have proper services and resources available to all of us for the next 10 years.
